The Work-Life Balance Myth

by Lynn Zettler

You read it right. There is no such thing as Work-Life Balance. Now do you feel relieved because you always thought it was unattainable, or worse because you were hoping you could still get there?

The concept of work-life balance originated in the 70’s and has been analyzed for decades. I think we all have a mental picture of a life sized teeter-totter balanced with work on one side and personal life on the other. Balance implies equal weight and anything less than balanced implies failure. In all honesty, do you really want work to consume 50% of your life? That’s 84 hours a week!

Don't Tell Me to Delegate, It Doesn't Work!

by Julie Kay

When I think of which topics on management development programs are most likely to be received with cynical looks from the learners, delegation quickly springs to mind.

Many managers don't like to delegate, and resist it, for a number of reasons:

  • You lose direct control and that can be really stressful.
  • You believe "if you want something done well, do it yourself." Or you feel that you have no-one that is up to the the task.
  • You don't have the time to "waste" on explaining and coaching others.  Much quicker to do it yourself.
  • You've been on the receiving end of poor delegation and, remembering how that felt, you don't want to "dump" on others.

You Don't Need a Boardroom to Have a Board of Advisors

by Lisa Cherney

Everyone needs coaches and advisors.  The greatest athletes and performers consult additional experts in areas outside their particular talent (golf, acting, etc), so they can maximize their success.  Does Tiger Woods write his own press releases or negotiate sponsorship contracts? Does Brad Pitt reconcile his own checking account? NO! They have a Board of Advisors around them to help them focus on doing what they love.  They acknowledge that their time is best spent on playing golf and acting (or just being with their families). They also know they are not experts on finance or marketing so they find people who are and ask for their help.

What can you learn about leadership from Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg? by Regina Barr

There's been a lot of buzz lately about a TED Talk video of Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, talking about why we have too few women leaders.(View Video)  She had several pieces of advice for how to ensure that more women make it to the top: take a seat at the table, make your partner a real partner, and don't leave before you leave.  (Watch the video for an explanation of these.) But what fascinated me the most was when she shared a comment made by a young woman working for her organization. Visit the Women At The Top.
